Responding to ideas of human interaction, connection, and identity, my work portrays the dualities of life and the conflicts within our own personal psychologies, our own existence and the struggles of reality.

The current period of my work is in watercolor & acrylic on paper or wood panel. These paintings resemble abstracted, groundless landscapes consisting of the same basic shape. The palette combines muted, vibrant, and iridescent colors. These paintings are as much about the complexity of human emotion as they are about color and light. My process has been a place of purging and release, and most often a space for meditation.

My first solo show was was held at The Painted Bride Gallery and Theater (Philadelphia, PA 2009) where I displayed works that explored the interaction between the conscious and subconscious mind through acts of painting and play. Since then, I have shown in galleries such as AxD Gallery (Philadelphia, PA), Mission Art Gallery (New York), HRLDRY Gallery (Los Angeles, CA), and Fathom Gallery (Los Angeles, CA). I hold a BFA in Drawing and Painting from The University of the Arts (Philadelphia, PA) and have received numerous honors and awards, including The Richard C. Von Hess Travel Scholarship and Fellowship Award, the Viola Foulke Scholarship, Soviak Memorial Scholarship, and The Promising Artist Award (UARTS).  My most recent solo show was held at Nous Tous Gallery (2018) in Los Angeles, CA

Ashley Payne lives and works in Los Angeles.
